Innovative Smart-SAF System seeks to mitigate the climate impact of aviation

In a bold step towards sustainability in the aviation industry, a collaboration between 3 entities: CITD, ELLIOT Cloud and the Smart City CLUSTER (SCC) Business Cluster have announced the development of the Smart-SAF system, framed within the recovery, transformation and resilience plan as well as financed in part by the European Union in the NextGenerationEU plan. This innovative technology focuses on reducing the environmental impact of persistent condensation stings produced by aircraft, which contribute significantly to climate change. With a combination of large-scale data analysis and artificial intelligence, the Smart-SAF system is designed to predict and evaluate the formation of these slates, thus providing a quantification of their environmental impact.

In addition to its detection and evaluation capacity, the system is also developing methods to mitigate the impact of these condensation sting fins. It will use the information collected to calculate the net impact of three possible alternatives that seek to reduce the effects of condensation slates. These calculations will be compared with the net impact of the reference flight, allowing to quantify the potential savings both in terms of CO2 emissions and its monetary equivalent, based on the costs of the "Emission Allowances" of the mandatory European emission management system EU-ETS. With these advances, the aviation industry may be one step closer to its sustainability goals.
